Llanelly & District Cemetery
[Also Known As Box Cemetery] - In Digital Images [Photographs of Graves]
Box Cemetery ( Llanelli District Cemetery) Box Cemetery was opened in 1850, until this date all burials including nonconformist were buried at the church cemetery at Old Road, but their ministers were not permitted to officiate at the burials. When the funeral reached the cemetery gates, the vicar took over. It was decide that ' It would be exceedingly desirable to obtain a spot of ground near the town for the interment of the dead of all classes, complexions, sects and creeds without distinction whatsoever' On behalf of the denominations represented at a meeting, a field of two acres, 12perches, was bought from the Squire of Stradey for £110.00p.Initially know as Llanelly Cemetery later became Box, the name of the district in which the cemetery falls, Ii was renamed 'Llanelli District Cemetery' in 1977.No burials were recorded until 1868.
